The United Kingdom released Fr. market research paper for alternative navigation for weapon systems to support GNSS.

In particular, the UK Defense Equipment and Support (DE&S) and Defense and Security Accelerator (DASA) want to understand the range of technologies used for commercial positioning and navigation systems. His main area of ​​interest is to know the location of the weapon during the deployment in the middle of the course, as shown in the figure below, with an accuracy of ± 5 meters. The technology guide to the ultimate goal is not within the scope.

Because GNSS is vulnerable to interference and deception, intelligence is interested in supporting navigation and positioning technologies such as:

  • Terrain Contour Matching (TERCOM): Uses radar altimeter and digital terrain elevation database.
  • Digital Scene Mapping (DSMAC): Maps an embedded image to an image database.
  • Inertial Navigation Systems (INS) or Inertial Units of Measurement (IMU): Calculate position for accurate speed and time measurements.

Market research is part of a larger technology demonstration program. Recently, defense agencies have focused on innovation, examining quantum navigation systems, and selected several proposals for funding.

Quantum technology is not beyond the scope of this study, but agencies are specifically looking for technologies that can be developed for prototype testing and testing over the next three years.
