HIGH POINT, NC (WGHP) — Tragedy struck a quiet neighborhood over the weekend, leaving five people dead.
That’s what High Point police are saying three children and two adults were killed in what they believe was a murder-suicide Saturday morning at a home on Mossy Meadow Drive in High Point.
High Point police received calls to the home as early as 2014, according to records. They also received calls in 2016, then in 2019 and most recently in January 2022. Police have not released details about those calls.
“I was in total shock because I’m like, ‘What’s happening in my neighborhood, you know, it’s really like, you don’t really think it’s going to happen, and hearing what’s happening in my neighborhood, really crazy.’
A neighbor said they woke up Saturday morning to two people banging on their door and ringing the doorbell, asking for help, saying someone was trying to kill them.
“The man said it was his father. Woke up with a gun in his head. Somehow he pulled the magazine out of the gun and they ran away.”
When officers arrived at the home, they found three children and two adults dead from gunshot wounds, and Capt. Matt Truitt of the High Point Police Department said they were working around the clock to gather all the information.
“I’ve been in law enforcement for a little over 18 years and I’ve never seen anything of this magnitude in the city of High Point,” Captain Truitt said.
Mass family murders are not uncommon in the United States. An Associated Press-Northeastern University database shows that about every three and a half weeks there has been a mass murder in the family for the past two decades.
Last May, Davie County is rocked by a murder-suicide that took the lives of an infant, a toddler and their mother. just last week five children were killed in a suicide in Utah after the man’s wife tried to divorce him.
Experts from Northeastern University say that mass murders in families make up 45% of the 415 mass shootings since 2006.
A press conference will be held on Monday at 1 p.m.
