The speed with which automakers are running away from traditional car dealerships to the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) has nothing to do with the beautiful weather in Las Vegas, and it’s all about how they want to be seen as leaders in the field technologies.

The race for bigger, better screens which can do more and is updated frequently, has led to a rather drastic change in the interior design of the car. Once crowded with buttons and knobs, the most fashionable interiors are now quite minimalist. What made us think about what people really want?

I have been feeling this for a long time rely only on screens is unreasonable. When the touch screens take over all the infotainment functions of the car, it inevitably leads to menus that are just as inevitably distracting from the road. You can’t feel the “button” on the screen, meaning you have to look at the screen, not the road. It may seem harmless, but if we agree that looking at the phone while driving is dangerous, then trying to do anything on a screen that is just as far from the road should also be dangerous.

There are also aesthetic arguments against the growth of screens. The Tesla Model 3, for example, get tired of even the most avid minimalist. And I’m sure if you asked an interior designer, they would say that minimalism is the 2010s.

Having said that, there was a period of time when vehicles had many of the features they have today, but had to do with smaller screens. This sometimes resulted in cars that were comically overloaded with buttons. Just because you feel the physical button doesn’t mean you’ll instantly learn what it does when surrounded by dozens of others, which isn’t really that much safer.

What do you think? Should I go all-in on touch screens? Avoid them at all costs? Is there a way of clever design that is the best of both worlds?
