NCDMV reveals ‘most secure licenses, IDs ever’

The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has announced the introduction of new driver’s licenses, permits, and identification cards that incorporate advanced security features specifically designed to combat fraud.

“I am proud to announce the implementation of the most secure credential in our great state’s history,” stated DMV Commissioner Wayne Goodwin in a press release. “Our new licenses and IDs will be among the most secure identifying documents in the world.”

According to the NCDOT, these new cards are constructed from 100% polycarbonate and personalized using laser engraving technology. This material not only gives the cards a distinct look but also makes them feel stiffer. The cards feature both embossed and debossed patterns and lettering on their surface. Additionally, when dropped onto a tabletop, the cards will produce a unique metallic sound.

The front of the card will showcase North Carolina’s state flower, the dogwood, along with the state flag, state border outline, a marbled salamander, and a lighthouse, all set against the rolling hills in the west. The back of the card features a Colonial Spanish mustang grazing on one of North Carolina’s beaches in the east.

The state has included over 50 security features in these new designs to help law enforcement deter and detect fraud.

Production of the new cards will begin later this week, and the current design will be phased out by the end of June. Existing licenses and ID cards will remain valid until their expiration date.
